Sunday SCENT N°9
This fragrance is more legend than perfume. This was one of the most important scents for me, introducing me to scents at a very young age. Chanel N°5 by CHANEL, worn with pearls and a costume by my grandmother, that’s the first image that comes to mind when I think back. I am reminded that I always wanted to become this Chanel N°5 lady back then. With my sweet little fourteen years this perfume was just out of my league. Disappointed, I closed this fragrance-file and went back to something more approachable. Yet the years have passed and now, just around my 32nd birthday, I coincidentally ran into Chanel N°5 again. Not the classic, but the new recreation called Chanel N°5 L’Eau … this week’s Sunday Scent and the olfactory dream I’ve been waiting for for over 15 years …

This scent reminds me of: Zeitgeist and elegance filled in a bottle. If this were ever possible, this fragrance would be it. Minimalism instead of overload, sleekness and precise shapes. All the attributes Coco Chanel and her perfume have always stood for, Chanel N°5 L’Eau is uttering them in today’s language of elegance and perfection.
What it feels like: Lighter and more transparent than the original one, but still possessing the same spirit of perfume legend: With these vibes Oliver Polge, son of the renowned Chanel-perfumer, has issued a very clear statement: Chanel N°5 L’Eau is not a lighter version, it the Chanel N°5 of the today. It feels just like it as well: the modern reincarnation of Chanel’s spirit. The Zeitgeist of the new Chanel N°5 generation, likewise elegant and pure – just in 2016.
For: This EAU DE TOILETTE is definitely not just my dream come true. Aside from the Chanel N°5 lovers, the real next generation that I also belong to, this fragrance is a solid beauty for almost every self-aware special lady - her style, her beauty, her power and her life. It’s a powerful combination of fruity to floral, from floral to sensitive, ingredients that leave the interpretation open for each woman wearing it, to personalize her own version of Chanel N°5 L’Eau … while carrying and honouring the legendary spirit about herself.
Side note: Perfumer Olivier Polge used less orange zest, but more aldehyde instead. He also refrained from the metallic notes present in the original. More citrus notes come to life whilst the powdery tones in the perfume’s base have been dampened, and the use of vanilla was reduced as well.
