CLASSIC by LUKAS ROTTER
Clear the stage for the fashion icons of forever and the present: Summer has turned its back on us and winter has yet to open her snow-white gates, and so we find ourselves in the season of changing colours – Autumn. A space between, not really cold nor warm, light or dark, wet or dry. Something special tinges the air and the sky, a certain essence that has inspired many an artist to works of a lifetime. Colours and forms, simple yet pure, a straightforward beauty. Without the need for pomp and circumstance. All of this is reflected in the great fashion classics that are popping up again, the ones that rise above all trends and fads to reappear in our collective spotlight around this time of year. Photographer Lukas Rotter – a Vienesse expat and, like myself, now a Neo-Berliner – took his camera to hand and together we created an homage to a few of our favourite style icons.
The name of the story: A brief history on CLASSIC | BIRD’S NEVER BORED’S Collection N°3.
THE BOMBER JACKET
Few articles of clothing have gone through as many transformations as the Bomber Jacket. Initially created for military men, the functional pilots jacket with its imposingly punkish back-patches quickly became an expressive article of fashion amongst the young and the wild. English Punks and Skinheads were the first to adopt it as a sign of their resistance to all that was conforming, but the iconic piece quickly went on to conquer Japan before reaching the Mecca of 80’s high fashion – Hollywood. The coat defined a swath of sub-cultures, quickly attaining a cult status before finally attaining worldwide recognition on the catwalks of the early 2000’s. Today, in 2016, she’s loved as much as always. Whether adorning broad male shoulders or hugging feminine hips, the Original from Alpha Industries always makes a point – especially oversized. My favourite this year is the all-white edition: the retro-rebel that loves to hit the stage with her companions, boots, or more specifically the Dr. Martens Flats.
THE WHITE TEE
Marlon Brando and James Dean are just two style icons that paid tribute to the White Tee. Times haven’t changed much since then and the cotton classic still attains its star qualities: fitting into every fashion era it still shines bright in its traditional plain-white, but slap a great print on it and its must-have allure shoots up even more … along with the price.
Apart from those ever-present pieces that stand above seasonal trends and the ebb and flow of fashion-time, a constant reminder of what’s happening in the world of dress is the lipstick. They work no matter the time or the season and at the forefront is, of course, the classic Red. These days also popular in darker tones, violet-red is the love of the lips in 2016. Ultra feminine is the name of its game, it sets powerful contrasts to todays Power-looks, breaking up the often masculine styling of Bomber jacket and Doc Martens.

THE BLACK TURTLENECK
The black turtleneck is more than just a piece of clothing. It adorns people and underscores characters. Its simple cut and pure class functions as a catalyst of good style, making it an easy choice for a grey autumn day – lending you a look of serious, smart and intelligent charm. Design Gurus like everyone’s favourite and first-to-mind Steve Jobs turned it into their own signature look, but it also adorned the neck and shoulders of iconic American Girls Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn. It’s no different for the great Designers: Yves Saint Laurent celebrated its beauty in combination with his classic suits and even Raf Simons utilised the black swans neck when he was with Jil Sander. The cult look continues through designers such as Alexander Wang or labels such as American Apparel: an all-time favourite with very personal notes – simple, beautiful, genius.
Every classic look, no matter which age of fashion history, has its companion. And if it’s not the shoes then it’s most definitely that one special handbag. By now we have a long line of it-bags running through the ages and new ones join them every year. But only a select few, the ones that manage to impress and impose for year after year, ascend to fashion Valhalla. One of these Demi-Gods is the Kate-Bag by Saint Laurent Paris, a Trademark of the Parisian fashion brand and unstoppable icon since 1961.

The most spectacular comeback of the year is arguably that of the culottes – the knee-length trouser-skirt. The wide-cut pants returned to the metropolitan streets and the worlds’ runways simultaneously, with extensions of the style such as the overalls by Steinrohner being a natural continuation of the wonderfully wide pants. An amazing garment, perfect for guiding us from warm summer nights into the more fresh autumn days.
THE COLOUR CRUSH
Lipstick ain’t allowed to go missing here, either. Next to the colourful focus the texture also becomes an important part of the look: everything goes, from a shining gloss to supremely lustreless. My favourite to spice things up: semi-lustre Candy-Pink.
THE CAT-EYES SHADES
Get a little funky with your choice of accessory. Dig around in the past a little bit and you stumble across some wonderful forms, especially adorning when it comes to choice of glasses. My favourite example is the cat-eye frame, which has been spreading feminine flair and a confident air of style since its introduction in the 60’s. The clear shades in the elegant rose gold hue by Andy Wolf are the perfect modern reincarnation of the classic look, sweeting up todays cold and calculated look with a retro-modern brilliance.

THE LONG DRESS
Grazing the floor upon which you walk and absolutely stunning: Kenzo’s new creations make any girls dreams a reality. Apart from that princess feeling which overcomes you when you slip on one of these beauties, you become aware of the power and confidence that wearing one of these dresses brings with it. This look is anything other than ordinary. The revolutionary trend of wearing a Maxi-Dress in everyday situations, rather than just as evening wear, has been going around since the 70’s: Yves Saint Laurent started it over 30 years ago. Dior, Halston, Biba and Cardin were quick to jump on the bandwagon to make the look “street-viable”. Whether in lace or wild colours, celebrate the maxi-dress in your everyday wardrobe, just like in the wild 70’s. Despite hippie-chic slowly becoming a thing of the past, what counts today is one thing only: wear it with pride. No matter the time of day.
The Kimono is unquestionably back in style. More than just a fashion classic, it stands for tradition, proven all the more by the one of a kind pieces by Rianna and Nina. Cut like an old-fashioned Kimono and made out of vintage silk cloths. This is the credo of the German fashion label. The designer duo combines a strong sense of style with an extraordinary eye for current trends. Folklore is back on the rise and quickly becoming a part of many modern looks. Whether as a dash of colour above a white maxi-dress or as the elegant finishing touch to the classic jeans and shirt combination, kimonos are all the rage, conquering streets from L.A. to Berlin.

THE FAKE FUR
Last but not least, I wanted to mention one last classic that has been gracing femininity in fashion for ages: the fur coat – but in its political correct variation, Faux Fur. Fur is unquestionably one of the most debated and argued over fashion items of the modern age, we wholly support the use of pure Faux Fur for modern variations of this look. More and more labels are starting to support this development and are surprising us with wonderful creations such as this one from Samsoe & Samsoe: 70’s glamour par excellence, and free of a guilty conscience. A Bohemian look straight out of the Zeitgeist that couples perfectly with a little black dress or your favourite piece of denim. Winter is coming, but now we’re equipped and ready, with style.
