ARTIST Paul DeFlorian

He uses colour. He knows how to share words. But beside his artistic talent as a painter, Paul DeFlorian is surprising us with his self-made fragrance, in collaboration with the traditional perfume house J.F. SCHWARZLOSE BERLIN, this year. The name of the Art Edition 2016 scent: Altruist - a fragrance that we’ve already introduced in our news feed. However, who is the man behind the „scent for feminists, cyborgs and survivors“? We’ve asked him to tell us more about himself, his work life and how this collaboration came into being …

About|I was not born this way; neither were you.

You live and work in Berlin. Now you’ve collaborated with the perfume house J.F. Schwarzlose for their new Art Edition. What was your first reaction when you were offered this project?
I had to think about it (as I always do when somebody offers me something).

When you think about perfume and scents, what are the first thoughts that spring to mind?
That you can't recall a scent by memory, but the scent can trigger a memory or thought.

What do art and perfumery have in common?
The conditions of the process and production.

What story did you want to tell by creating a fragrance?
I always draw the attention to the work's (in this case perfume) status as an artifact; I force the recipient to reflect on the fictional character of the narrative.

What inspired you?
Imaginary flowers; The smell of young men coming from the shower at the gym, using really cheap deodorant and still sweating fresh sweat.

What inspires you in your everyday artistic work?
I don't have an ‘everyday’ artistic practice, nor a signature style in my paintings and drawings and the other stuff I do; I like to be insecure, to feel like I don't know where to go when I start working.

How would you describe the current art scene in Berlin?
I don't have an opinion about it.

Why did you choose this city as your base?
It's a city where you can easily disappear and be on your own.

What’s an artist’s hardest challenge these days?
Work.

Besides painting, the creation of the packaging and the scent, you also directed a video for the launch of your eau de toilette. What was the idea behind it, and why did you choose this medium to work with?
I was commissioned by Schwarzlose Berlin to make a video ….
