SUPER by Hilde van Mas

Finally - BIRD’S NEVER BORED goes online with its first Collection. Why would you want to know? The answer is: We are all hunters and collectors. Myself, for example - I’m hunting around the clock, always looking for something special. Something that is worth being collected. A passion that has developed into this project and also provided the basis for this very first collection.

I follow the motto: April showers bring May flowers. It’s time for something new - something that is not tied to a special time, a place or any other guideline. Something that is able to cross these borders. Freedom, freethinking and creating are the poles that this project is based on. A credo that is also the rank and file of art: liberty. My mentor and photographer, Hilde van Mas, created the debut. A SUPERwoman establishing the topic of the first collection, called SUPER.

SUPER - one word. Short, precise… stock? Most certainly it’s ever-present, hence it gives the first collection the perfect frame:

We are living in a time of the SUPERlative. Driven by perfection, everything that’s not SUPER seems irrelevant. SUPERwoman, SUPERman, SUPERmodels, even SUPERfood is part of our daily language. What was that again… SUPERcalifragilisticexpialidocious …okay, that’s going a bit too far. But with Disney’s Mary Poppins this word caught our attention… anyhow. Another word: SUPERstars - better known for their huge influence on Pop-Art, one of the most successful art movements of our time, thanks to works like Warhol’s Monroe. But also icons like my compatriot Romy Schneider and her Hollywood-style SUPERpower influence the present – fashion and the image of women. They were the first SUPERinfluencers, followed by current style icons like Garance Doré, who still feast on their SUPERpower. There is always a drawback, however:

„It’s never enough“.

I once asked the question: What would you wish for if you could have anything? And I just got a single unexpected answer: „A horse!” Not a unicorn - which would have probably been my answer. No - simply a horse. Not because it’s a status symbol, not because of the pleasure of riding it. Just because it’s beautiful. That’s all.

That is exactly what we should be remembering these days: SUPER is just an indicator for that which truly makes us happy, and not a SUPERlative that prescribes what we think or who we are. It should simply inspire us. That’s exactly why this editorial came into being - a special collection inspired by this word. Not as a target, but rather to get us thinking …crossing borders to think, feel and act beyond the normal scope. To experience our personal way of SUPER without correlating to the SUPERlative. Just out of a need for freedom - the freedom to hunt and collect.

Also one of these SUPERwomen: The Austrian, and French by choice, Romy Schneider. The iconic actor was already on camera as a teenager. She and her contemporaries Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Sophia Lauren or Grace Kelly still rank as SUPERstars, icons and divas. All of them were responsible for the Hollywood’s real success - a SUPERpower that came into action.

Also on board: the SUPERbrands. Funnily enough, they also use the SUPERpowers of the past. SUPERnatural

Influenced by all the iconicity surrounding us, it is only logical that we, too, want to look perfect – just like our idols do. Therefore, the desires of our SUPERme are larger than ever. Help comes via science, and the cosmetics industry leads the way. Brands like RODIAL or CLINIQUE prove their beautifying SUPERpowers by revealing achievements around the clock, all the while utilising both natural and high-tech ingredients.

SUPERfood

Finishing up the SUPER cycle, the last topic we picked is SUPERfood. Extremely healthy, extremely good - it’s kind of the epitome of the SUPERlative. … and there we go: SUPERfood has already replaced fast food in our long-beloved menus and, in return, fries and Co. are immortalised in fashion - to stay SUPERiconic.
